In the mid–19th century, East 20th Street landed on the national map thanks to President Theodore Roosevelt, who spent his childhood in a townhouse on 28 East 20th Street (the building has since been turned into a historic site). The area was seriously on the rise at the time, thanks to the building of Gramercy Park in the 1830s — which turned the surrounding blocks into a wealthy neighborhood.
